It can be same as saying that if you are not mindful of what is happening now, you would never be ready for what your future has to offer you because later, the thing you are labeling as the “future” today would soon be labeled as your “present”. Being mindful is really important in many aspects of your life but before that, we must define what mindfulness is first.

If you are in a classroom filled with people with your professor talking in front about French Revolution while you are playing a game on your cellular phone, you are not mindful of what is happening around the classroom. You are just aware that your professor is discussing something in front and that you are in a classroom but you do not know what is actually going on. Mindfulness is when you know you are there and you exert effort in paying attention to your professor and to what he is saying. Last example would be an instance where you see that your mom and dad are fighting but you can hardly hear and understand what they are arguing about. You see them fighting but you do not know what exactly happened. If you are not mindful, you would just immediately think that it is the fault of either your mom or your dad. You would jump into conclusions and you would judge either one of them. Mindfulness is when you are aware that your mom and dad are fighting and you take time to understand why they are arguing. You would not generalize based on your past experiences from them. Instead, you would analyze what is happening and you would not just judge.

Being mindful is putting your attention and care to a certain situation on that same moment during the occurrence of that event and being very critical about all sides of that situation. It is being to recognize the emotions and the deepest corners of that event. It is being able to evaluate and analyze that situation with utmost care and open-mindedness that you have acquainted from being mindful during that same circumstance. Being mindful is a cycle. Mindful – How Meditation Helps Me Thrive And Feel Free

In essence, for me, meditation is being in touch with reality. I find it soothing that after I accept how perfect my life is, my word becomes clear. I feel healthy, happier and more free.

When I meditate, I do not try to force anything. I just sit quietly. Focus my breath as it goes into my lungs. I focus on my heart as it beats in my chest. Simply routine.

For many, meditation reduces stress, gives peace of mind, relaxation and increased clarity. Other benefit may be increased energy, balance and connection. Personally, I feel in sync with all things around me. Nature, if you will.

Think of your mind as a glass. It gets full of thoughts and ideas. I think of meditation as emptying the glass. Once you empty some of (or all) of the glass, you can sift and put aside some of the diamond bits of wisdom for later.

When you have a clear mind, you're more able to respond and react to the environment around you. I notice the small details in things such as the birds chirping, the beautiful sky or pretty garden that I drive by.

It opens up for me the things I am grateful for.

What is your meditation routine? You get up at the same time, brush your teeth, you have a routine when you eat meals when you're body hungry. usually at the same time. Those routines are ingrained. It's the same with a meditation routine. Set your schedule with 15-45 minutes of meditation. Do it early morning, in between your busy afternoon, or evening time. I find that for me, early morning is best. I have less clutter in my mind and I have more energy in the AM.

You can find websites where you can play and listen to white background noise while I meditate. I play it from my laptop speaker.

With meditation time, you have a circadian rhythm of what time of day is best. Try doing this the same time each day.

Distractions off. Turn off TV, cell phone, distracting lights (like lamps or blinking computer lights), radio.

Where's your place? I find that even the car can be my spot. If you're at home, find a quiet place (maybe a closet or bathroom). If you have kids, ask your spouse or friend to watch the children for that hour. The place could be the park or during a yoga session at the gym (if your instructor implements quiet time meditation during class)

Start with 5 minutes of quiet, meditation time and work up by adding 5 more minutes after a week.

Oxygen is necessary to live. There is no monitoring breathing mechanism. Is not that amazing? Breath in for 5 seconds, exhale and breath out for 7 seconds.

Say your mantra in your head as you exhale. I am whole, healthy, happy, perfect and strong. Repeat this process for about 5-7 minutes.

As you say your mantra, Imagine images of a perfect scene in your mind's eye. As you image those mental pictures, ask yourself: What are you doing? What are you wearing? Who are you with? How do your clothes fit?

My favorites: I meditate on my back on the floor or couch. I find the early morning works best for me. I find if I do mediate in the evening, I'm more tired and may dose off to sleep.

Be as crisp and colorful in your detail of your scene. Start with a small chunk of time. Breathe deeply and say your mantras. I know you will feel better, have clarity. If I could describe my day with meditation in one word, it would be: magnificent.

My Mother Used To Say

“Carl, if you look hard enough, you can see good in everything.” Mom called it a “Happy Fault”. She used Christ's crucifixion as an example. It was sad that He suffered and died, but good that He redeemed us.

In my life and in my work as a therapist, I have come to see how right she was.

Many years ago, when I was practicing in another city, a young, desperate woman came for help. She was very depressed and unhappy because she was a single mother struggling to raise her two children five and six years old. Her husband had abandoned her when they were infants. She met this man who sweet talked her. Took her to bed. Told her he had a vasectomy. Got her pregnant and promptly

Disappeared. We discussed her options. I was happy to hear that she would not consider an abortion. I suggested adoption .. We talked about that at some length and she agreed to consider it. As she was leaving she said, “Oh! My mother. When I discovered that her mother lived only a few blocks away, I encouraged her to tell her and to get it over with.

Well, she came back two weeks later and was elated. She told her mother and her mom said, “I am not made of sugar. I know what it is to be lonely. I love you and will support you.” Wow! … She called her sister who was in California hoping to get a job in the movie business. The sister knew a couple there who were trying to adopt but, were in their forties and did not qualify. They were considering going to the orient for a baby. The sister put her in touch with them. She flew out to California to talk about it and they came to this agreement. The couple would adopt the child, give her one thousand dollars a month for a year, and pay all her medical expenses. Also, the couple were so pleased, that they opened some doors for the sister and she got a job ..

From something that seemed so rotten, a child is born into the world, she and her mother are brought closer, the childless couple has a baby, The woman is helped financially and the sister has a job. So … My Mom knew what she was talking about.

When I was an adolescent, I had the agony of acne. More times than not I had Mount Vesuvius on my forehead. In fact, I fell asleep at the library once and woke up with a blind man reading my face! You may be smiling but it was not funny then.

I tried every thing to get rid of those pimples, but puberty prevailed. As I look back at it now, I realize that in many ways it was a good thing. The people selling the stuff that I tried made a living from it. I developed a sense of humility that comes from having suffered and I believe, makes me a more compassionate man today.

Also, I remember well, one great day, when I met a young lady I had not seen in a long time and she said, “Carl, your bumps are gone!” I was the happiest guy in the world!

We have got to get sick to appreciate being well. The power has to go out before we truly enjoy the luxury of electricity. Think of all the times in your life when you looked back at something you believed was terrible, and, in the light of a new day, was the best thing ever happened to you.

We see it so often in nature, The seed has to die so that the flower can grow. The beautiful autumn leaves have to fall to replenish the earth. Life is lost and life is found. I remember a special on television where penguins suffer intense cold and sacrifice to protect their eggs so that the species will flourish.

So when life is the pits and the rent is not paid and you are in despair and you can not see the light at the end of the tunnel, remember my Mother's words. Have hope, say a prayer, do something to change things and sure as the sun comes up in the morning, something good will be there for you.

There’s a Secret to Getting Yourself to Meditate

As a meditation teacher, I've heard countless students share their excuses for why they did not meditate in the past week. They wanted to. They know it would be good for them. They just did not do it. At least, not consistently.

Something always seems to get in the way: they need more sleep, the dog needs to be walked, the kids are up, they had to work late or had an early meeting, they felt too angry, worried, or irritable … Meditation just did not seem as important as other things they had to do. Yet, all those things they did not give them the peace of mind they desired.

Of course, meditation is about changing your relationship with all the events, worries, and anxieties in your life. It's a daily ritual-like eating, sleeping, and brushing your teeth-that creates a more relaxed, healthy, meaningful, and intentional way of living. It's a powerful practice to realize the deep peace of mind we all desire. So, what's the secret to moving from excuses to practice?

The answer is: you've got to have a strong “Why?”

The answer may surprise you.

The Secret is Body Awareness

Your body is not just a mechanical vehicle for carrying out all the activities in your life. It is a highly-sensitive bio-feedback system.

Your body can tell you what is good for you to eat and how much, when you need to rest, when you need to relax and have fun, when you need to get up and move, and when you need to be alone, have contact with others, be in nature, and spend time in meditation. It connects you to when, why, and how much to do anything. If you're paying attention.

In our context, it connects you to WHY you might want to meditate in the first place. At least it has the potential to do this-if you pay attention. Yet, how often do you pause and really pay attention to your body's signals? How often do you stop to sense what it is telling you?

Why are not you doing this?

First off, we have a culture that encourages just the opposite. We are encouraged to focus outwardly rather than inwardly. We are encouraged to do as much as possible. We are encouraged to gather as many products and as much wealth, data, and sensory input from the external environment as we possibly can.

We are encouraged to react quickly and are discouraged from taking time for well-considered and deeply felt responses. We are conditioned to quick reactions and sound bites on news and social media. We are impatient with anything that takes time. We go, go, go, until we are too exhausted to continue.

Do you feel this exhaustion?

Yet, are you worried about what might happen if you stop? Are you worried you'll fall behind and be left out? At a certain point, you may decide you just do not want to live this way anymore. When you reach this point-or preferably long before that-take a moment to pay attention inside. Notice what all this thinking, doing, worry, accumulation, and stimulation is doing to you.

Is there another option?

Meditation Creates a New Way of Being

Meditation interrupts nonstop thinking and doing and gives your body a chance to relax deeply-something you may not even get to do in a restless sleep. Consciously relaxing, as you do in meditation, unwinds tension accumulated beneath your awareness in the past 24 hours as well as in the years of your life up to this point. It slowly dissolves the reactive mental-emotional patterns that drive you on the hamster wheel of nonstop activity. It quiets your mental chatter.

Now, when you first start to meditate, you may not notice this relaxing, quieting, and calming effect. You may become even more aware of how busy your mind is, how conflicting your emotions are, and how tense your body is. If you have mistreated your body through over-stress for a long period of time, initial moments of Body Awareness in meditation might not feel so great.

Or, you may feel little to nothing at all. All that thinking, doing, and pushing yourself to do things you feel “have to” or “should” do may have cut you off from how you feel. You may have lost touch with your vital sensations and feelings. You may just feel bored without external stimulation keeping you distracted.

Yet, discomfort, boredom, or numbness, when you face them honestly, directly, gently, and without judgment, as you do in meditation, can alert you to just how much you need to activate another way of being.

If you heed this signal and take time to sit, breathe, and mindfully notice what's happening inside-the layers of stress will begin to unwind and your vital senses will reawaken. As you unwind, Body Awareness may tell you just how exhausted you are from the way you are going about your life.

As you pay close attention to what your body has to say, you might find that all those things you've been chasing after may not be as important as they seem. You may discover you do not want to live on the human hamster wheel of incessant activity, worry, and anxiety any longer. You may be inspired to make new choices that reflect your soul's deaf desires.

Meditation beckons you to a more relaxed, healthy, meaningful, and intentional way of living-and your body will tell you just how important this is-if you pay attention.
